Haiku Noir from Eight Shades of Blue

this ancient face
lit by the eyes of a child—
it’s time to shed

                                                                  dug-in in Da Nang—
                                                                  studying history’s
                                                                  most ghastly lessons

                                                                                                                                    zoo mothers
                                                                                                                                    clutch their babies
                                                                                                                                    both sides of bars
