a velvet night
pours down stars
by whole handfuls

bouncing rain
off the skylight
a light-gray alto

shamelessly red
May’s tulips
unhinge the day

a lone gray whale
breaching the horizon
. . . . then another

ripe wheat
swaying in August heat
the combine stalled

hidden moon
your eyes so silent
nothing speaks of love

unzipping summer
in the grass
your lips to mine
