suburban mall
blackbirds whistle
in the crabapple trees

velvet antlers—
deer after deer after deer
bounds over the fence

a wintry mix
woolly alpacas munch hay
with walking horses

a student shows me
boa constrictor photos
the snake lost in her car seats
on my drive home
my legs tremble

leaky roof
at the public library
aides tiptoe about
dumping soggy classics
into the trash can

evening walk
goldenrod slices the glade
into broad triangles—
grandmother’s custard pie
waiting in the kitchen
