Baltimore, Maryland – September 14, 2007 – Landfall: Poetry of Place in Modern English Tanka, edited by Denis M. Garrison and Michael McClintock, has been published in both hard cover and trade paperback editions by Modern English Tanka Press, Baltimore, Maryland. This is the third in a series of tanka poetry anthologies from these editors. It is about the lands we live in, the highlands and the lowlands, prairies and forests, deserts and wetlands, farmlands and wilderness, the vast continental interiors and the lands bordering the seas, and the waters of the earth. As such, it is inevitably a book about ourselves. Every generation makes anew its own landfall, discovering for itself its special, abiding relationship to the natural world. With these fine tanka, 600 pastoral poems of a new kind for a new day, the greatly prized moment of making landfall becomes, also, an irrevocable moment of personal epiphany. Poets included are from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, India, Thailand, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
The editors of Landfall and its soon to be released companion anthology, Streetlights, have previously published two related anthologies dealing with sets and sequences of tanka poems: The Five-Hole Flute and The Dreaming Room. These new wave tanka anthologies are breaking new ground in English short verse at the same time that they are carrying forward the oldest continuous poetic tradition on earth, that of waka/tanka. All these anthologies are published by Modern English Tanka Press.
