Lilacs After Winter: Haibun
|
Raised in Illinois, Francis (Fran) Masat earned his Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska. After a 35 year teaching career, he is Professor Emeritus, Rowan University of New Jersey. Fran has been a farmer, plumber, editor, carpenter, mason, salesperson, politician, marathoner, and parent. In Key West, he is a 24/7 wildlife rescuer and active in feeding shut-ins, fundraising, running, biking, and writing. Fran’s poetry has won prizes and honorable mentions and appears in over 80 anthologies, literary journals, and ezines. His work features gritty heart-rending narratives, often written metaphorically, and includes prose poems and poems with multiple themes and interwoven styles. A successful haijin, Fran often begins with minute insights into daily life that expand to yield complete scenes of loss, coping, and success. As his work draws upon experience and observation, Fran says that he "combines an unapologetic naturalism with formal clarity and emotion. I am known to be authentic and accessible. I strive for tight language, but with musicality and an easy cadence." Since 1993, Fran and his wife, Carol, have lived in tropical Key West where he reads with the Key West Poetry Guild and serves on the Key West Robert Frost Poetry Festival Board. His recent chapbooks are Lilacs After Winter (haibun, MET Press, 2008), and A Taste of Key West (poetry, Pudding House Press, 2008). Email: cfmasat@bellsouth.net
