Bibliography of English-Language Tanka
Compiled by M. Kei, 2006-2008
I began the
Bibliography of English-Language Tanka
in 2006 as a finding aid for
myself as I researched tanka literature. At the time there were only a few bibliographies
(Rosenow, Higginson,
American Tanka
) and they were heavy on translations from the
Japanese. Some reading lists were also out there; later the
Recommended Reading List
for Tanka Studies
would be developed by the short-lived but influential Tanka
Roundtable and edited by Denis M. Garrison. It rapidly became apparent that the field of
English-language tanka publication was both old and large—far older and larger than
was generally assumed at the time. I began by sharing the
Bibliography
in an informal
way with colleagues then organized it into a more formal presentation.
The name and format evolved with the material. Finding information is both time-
consuming and tedious, each time I work on it I attempt to improve accuracy,
thoroughness, and readability. Nonetheless, many of the sources are tertiary,
incomplete, or erroneous, so in spite of my best efforts to track down canonical
information, errors are likely. Corrections and additions are appreciated. The
Bibliography
now includes periodical information, as well as books, chapbooks,
websites, and other media. The
Bibliography
includes the standard abbreviations for
Tanka Venues approved by the Tanka Society of America, but I have found it necessary
in my own work to expand the listing without waiting for the TSA to update. Those are
included here. Should the TSA expand the Tanka Venue list, this
Bibliography
will be
updated to include their additions.
This
Bibliography
also includes annotations regarding the medium, with
unannotated entries presumed to be chapbooks or books. Occasional other notes are
included for clarification or disambiguation. Periodicals are listed in their year of first
publication, plus when significant name changes occurred. Listed editors are founding
and/or longest running editors. Eventually there will be a separate
Bibliography of
Periodical Literature;
the draft already documents over one thousand issues reasonably
believed to contain tanka, approximately 80% of which have been investigated.
It should be noted that many of the titles are not 'tanka books' but rather 'works
containing tanka.' The publication of mixed collections with variable amounts of tanka is
frequent. I did not attempt to document every tanka ever published, merely the sources
in which one would find a 'significant' number of tanka. This number was set at a very
low threshold on the grounds that inclusion was better than exclusion. If the word 'tanka'
was included in the title or subtitle, it is included. If a chapbook or book contained at
least six individual tanka or a tanka sequence, it was included. For journals, if it
'frequently' (but not necessarily regularly) published tanka, it was included.
Please note, this is an incomplete listing. I searched existing bibliographies, poet
biographies, library catalogs, university archives, journals, international booksellers,
recommended reading lists, small press catalogs, websites, the Haiku Archive, the
Library of Congress, tanka organizations, and queried many poets. I reviewed materials
principally in English, but also French and Spanish, as well as some German, Dutch,
Bibliography of English-Language Tanka
Romanian, Croatian, and other international sources, but searches in languages other
than English were not exhaustive.
I excluded Japanese books in English translation unless they were bilingual or
were translations of works by Western poets who published in Japanese, or were by
Japanese poets in the West. For the period of the late 1800s to the early 1900s,
attempting to discover when and how works became available in English is particularly
tricky; where did Kuki Shuzo first publish his 'Paris' tanka, and in what language(s)?
More recently, a number of Japanese poets have been published in English in Japan,
but it is impossible to know if they wrote in English or were translated, or whether the
English-language version constitutes the first appearance, or at least a co-equal
appearance. A bibliography of Japanese works in translation and their critical
scholarship would easily number in the thousands and that is a task this compiler is not
prepared to undertake.
Often catalog listings, reviews, and other resources were incomplete, so I erred
on the side of inclusion. However, there are dozens of books and chapbooks for which I
have so little information I could not even guess whether they contain tanka. They were
not included. Some publications failed to give even basic bibliographic information such
as the date and location where they were published. Each entry has been published
with as much information as I can find on the grounds that little is better than nothing.
New in this addition is the inclusion of ISBN and ISSN. In addition, numerous
corrections of typos, spelling errors, titles, subtitles, authorship, dates, places,
publishers, etc, have been made. As always, the reader should remember that this is a
work in progress and should verify any critical piece of information himself. I welcome
additions and corrections at: kukaju (at) verizon (dot) net, or via snail mail at: M. Kei, P
